Passing knowledge to protect bird species: LPO PACA’s training initiatives for distribution and transmission grid operators in France

Understanding and addressing environmental issues through training is essential for effective conservation of bird species around electricity grid infrastructure. Our partner LPO PACA has long been at the forefront, providing specialised training for employees of ENEDIS (French distribution system operator) and RTE (French transmission system operator). The SafeLines4Birds project further enhances this mission, aiming to consolidate and disseminate vital knowledge among stakeholders.

One of the primary preparatory actions of the project involves equipping various LPO teams with the skills needed to train personnel from electricity transport and distribution companies. This cascading training model ensures a wider reach and deeper impact.

In February 2024, a week-long intensive training course was held in the Verdon region. Approximately fifteen participants from different LPO structures attended this training session.

The course was divided into two comprehensive parts:

  1. Training the Trainers: The initial phase focused on equipping participants with the skills to design and conduct effective training sessions. This foundational training ensured that participants could subsequently teach others efficiently.

  2. Practical Application: The latter half of the week was dedicated to hands-on practice. Participants implemented the training modules they had learned, preparing them to deliver three distinct types of training:

    • Biodiversity – Knowledge and issues: This core curriculum aims to foster a shared understanding of environmental concerns and the importance of integrating biodiversity considerations into daily operation of the grid.

    • Avifauna equipment – Usefulness and implementation: This training underscores the significance of avifauna protection equipment, ensuring that personnel understand the purpose and proper installation methods. It helps perpetuate the company’s expertise in safeguarding birdlife from hazardous power lines.

    • Ecological management of vegetation under power lines: A technical course designed to help trainees analyse and adapt their vegetation management actions during worksites, considering the environmental and biodiversity implications.

The success of this inaugural session has set a promising precedent. In light of the positive feedback and tangible benefits, a second session is scheduled in 2025. This continued effort reaffirms LPO PACA's commitment to empowering stakeholders with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect our nature effectively.
